Fossil Eyes @ Pilot Light

With the flood of lo-fi garage rockers these days, it's sometimes hard to sort through the countless bands floating around the internet. However, it makes the good bands that much more worth it to find. This evening, at the Pilot Light, comes one of those bands. Originally known as Junkers, Fossil Eyes are pumping out some reverb-drenched garage rock that's as danceable as it is psychedelic and dirty. You can stream their album after the break or catch them tonite at the Pilot Light, cover's $5.

Psychedelic Furs @ The Bijou

In the late 1970's the musical landscape was changing dramatically. Sometimes heading in two seemingly opposite directions. On one hand, the polished and over produced sounds of disco were making their way out of Studio 54 and other nite spots into clubs all across America. On the other, punks, post-punks, and even new wavers were beginning to crawl out of CBGB's as well as L.A.'s burgeoning scene, sparked by a wave of bands across the Atlantic such as The Clash, Sex Pistols, and many, many others.

Formed during this musically tumultuous  period came the Psychedelic Furs. The group was formed in 1977 by brothers Richard and Tim Butler. Emerging from the British punk scene, the Furs would not release their eponymous first album until 1980. Finding some success in Europe, the band would not reach American audiences until 1981 with their second full-length release, Talk Talk Talk. Featuring classic Furs tunes including "Dumb Waiters," "Into You Like a Train," and "Pretty in Pink," the latter of which inspired the 1986 John Hughes film, Pretty In Pink. Tonite the Psychedelic Furs perform their classic album in its entirety at the Bijou Theatre on Gay Street. Show starts at 7:30p and tix are fairly priced at $16.00. Friday Flavor

We're a little bit past the halfway marker for 2011 and my how the first half has flown by. This week are some standout artist releases from the first half of the year. Of course, there are many more that I don't have room to post, but I believe these artists have helped make 2011 a standout year for music, indie or not...

TV on the Radio- No Future Shock

Perhaps the most anticipated release of the year (by myself at least), TV on the Radio did not disappoint. With a more mature sound and an album about love found and lost, TVOTR hit the nail on the head with Nine Types of Light. They are currently back on tour after a brief hiatus following the death of bassist Gerard Smith.

The Weeknd- What You Need

Wow... Finally some real soul and R&B. First leaked in 2010, House of Balloons, was released in March. Abel Tesfaye may not be classically trained or as talented as some contemporaries, but blows them out of the water when it comes to real emotion and feeling.

Com Truise- Fairlight

When other chillwave artists (Toro y Moi, Washed Out) began trying to distance themselves from the over-hyped genre, Jersey native Seth Haley embraced it. Bringing attitude and style to the genre, Com Truise has become the King of Chill.

Cults- Abducted

We're finding out more and more everyday about Cults. After releasing their three track EP last year, Cults toured furiously with the likes of Best Coast, Asobi Seksu, and many others. Their tireless efforts paid off when the band released their debut LP just last month.
