Tom Jones @ Tennessee Theatre

There aren't many in the entertainment industry that have a  resumé as lengthy and diverse as that of Tom Jones. Born in 1940, in the United Kingdom, Thomas John Woodward was raised in South Wales. Jones began singing at an early age and in 1963 became part of the British Invasion when he became lead singer of Tommy Scott and the Senators. Breaking away from his welsh beat group, Tom signed with Decca records. His first international, hit single came with Jones' "It's Not Unusual." The song peaked at number one in the UK and the top 10 in the US.

Throughout the late 60's, Tom Jones was a recurring name on pop charts and began playing regularly in Las Vegas. Relocating to America, Jones became the host of This is Tom Jones!, a variety show hosted by the man himself. With his popularity slipping by the end of the 70s, Jones began recording country in the early 80s. Always evolving, Jones began teaming up with modern artists and producers in the 90s and early 00s, including Wyclef Jean, Future Cut, and Jools Holland. Jones latest release, 2010's Praise and Blame, features him digging into the American songbook including numbers by John Lee Hooker and Bob Dylan.

You can catch Tom Jones tonite at Tennessee's State Theatre located in the heart of downtown. Tickets for the show will set you back either $90 or $65 plus fees.  Read more for what to expect from Tom Jones legendary, 46 year career...

Lucinda Williams @ Bijou Theatre

Perhaps one of the most critically acclaimed artists of the last few decades, Lucinda Williams has been making waves in the country/americana world for years. However, it has taken fans longer to warm up to Lucinda's unique style. Many critics claim that Williams' obscurity is due to the length between album releases, sometimes taking years between albums. However, this can be attributed to Lucinda's fabled obsession with perfection and attention to detail.

Born in Louisiana, Williams was raised listening to blues and country artists such as Hank Williams. Moving around the country, she shared her time between Austin, Houston, New York, and Los Angeles. Her first album,  Ramblin' on My Mind, also referred to as Ramblin' , was released in 1979 and featured classic country and blues standards. Her follow up, 1980's Happy Woman Blues featured all original compositions and showcased her talents as a singer and songwriter but was generally overlooked by fans and critics.

Lucinda wouldn't release her next official follow up until 1988. The eponymous album featured the song "Passsionate Kisses." The song would be recorded by Mary Chapin Carter and would give Lucinda her first grammy. However, Lucinda Williams' greatest success would come with the release of 1998's Car Wheels on a Gravel Road. After years of working on the album obsessively and a few legal woes, the album was bought and released by Mercury. The album went on to become gold and would win Lucinda the best folk album that year. Lucinda has released a couple of albums in the last decade including 2001's Essence and this year's Blessed.

Tonite's show at the Bijou will hopefully showcase Lucinda's amazing talents in a very intimate venue. Tickets are $39.50 plus fees and showtime is at 8:00p. Read more for what to expect...

Amos Lee @ Tennessee Theatre

With four albums under his belt, Amos Lee has been making waves in the adult contemporary (for lack of a better term) world. With influences ranging from jazz to rock, country to blues, the Philadelphia native has crafted his own unique place in the musical world. Since the release of his eponymous debut album, Mr. Lee has toured with a who's who list of artists including Norah Jones (who's bassist, Lee Alexander, produced Amos' debut), Bob Dylan, Dave Matthews, and English singing sensation Adele. Amos always had an affinity for music, but after working as a school teacher, he decided to pursue it as a career. Amos was signed to Blue Note records after he was noticed by future label mate, Norah Jones. Earlier this year, the Philly native released his fourth album entitled, Mission Bell. The album includes appearances by Willie Nelson, members of Calexico, and Lucinda Williams (who will be at the Bijou Wednesday). Opening up for Amos tonite will be Los Angeles alt-rockers The Wastson Twins. Read more for what to expect...

Steve Miller Band @ The Tennessee Theatre

Tonite, the Steve Miller Band comes to the Tennessee Theatre as part of the Legends Series hosted by Lexus of Knoxville. With a string of hits in the 70's, Steve Miller and his band have become classic rock legends. Born in Wisconsin but getting his start playing blues in Chicago, Miller transplanted to San Francisco at the height of the psychedelic scene. Forming the Steve Miller Blues Band in 1967, the band built a local following by playing free shows and backing Chuck Berry for a concert at the Filmore that was later released as a live album.Childhood friend Boz Scaggs relocated to San Francisco joining the band just in time to rock the Monterey Pop Festival. The band received a record deal from Capitol shortly after.

SMB started the seventies off slow but finished strong. Their first album, "Children of the Future," was recorded in London and received some airplay. The band's subsequent releases failed to do much of anything. In 1972, Miller broke his neck in a car accident and developed hepatitis. This put him out of commission for most of '72 and '73. Steve Miller came back strong however, releasing "Living in the USA" and his first platinum album "The Joker."  The band kept gaining momentum throughout the '70's and into the early 80's with classics such as "Fly Like an Eagle," "Book of Dreams," and "Abracadabra." Since, Steve Miller Band has become a staple on classic rock radio. The show tonite will more than likely be a journey through SMB's long, successful career. If you're gonna catch the seminal seventies rockers tonite, tickets are going to set you back $82.50 plus fees and the show starts at 8p.

Vestival 2011

We all know about major music festivals like Bonnaroo or Hang Out, but sometimes the smaller, lesser-known festivals can be more fulfilling due to the intimate performances and smaller crowds. Since 2001, a festival of this nature has been taking place in South Knoxville. Known as Vestival, a combination of the words Vestal, the community in which it takes place, and festival, it was begun by Trudy Monaco who wanted to celebrate the history and heritage of the community as well as South Knox. Taking place Saturday May 7 the fest is now headed up by Lonetone's front man, Sean McCullough.  Now in it's 10th year the festival has been held on the grounds of the historic Candoro Marble Company Building. The festival features art, crafts, and food vendors from around the region. Vestival is currently looking for volunteers, so head to their facebook if you're interested. Read more for the lineup....

Cage the Elephant @ The Valarium

Representing our state's neighbor to the North and proof that Europe is a little ahead of the trend when it comes to rock 'n roll, Cage the Elephant has come up quickly and seem to be enjoying every minute of it. Getting their start only five years ago in Bowling Green, KY, the band got a record deal in '07 after their SXSW showcase. After releasing their debut album in 2008 in Europe, the mainstream rockers blew up due to their single "Ain't No Rest for the Wicked" and a strong cast of supporting songs. The band consists of brothers Matthew and Brad Shultz on piano, vocals, and rhythm guitar, as well as Lincoln Parish (lead guitar), Daniel Tichenor (bass, vocals), and Jared Champion rounding it out on drums. Here stateside, the Kentucky rockers have toured with the likes of Silversun Pickups and Stone Temple Pilots, as well as playing slots at major festivals such as Bonnaroo and Outside Lands. Doors open at 8p tonite with the show beginning at 9p. Opening will be Sleeper Agent (also of Bowling Green) and Scots, Biffy Clyro. Read more for what to expect tonite...
