Lucinda Williams @ Bijou Theatre

Perhaps one of the most critically acclaimed artists of the last few decades, Lucinda Williams has been making waves in the country/americana world for years. However, it has taken fans longer to warm up to Lucinda's unique style. Many critics claim that Williams' obscurity is due to the length between album releases, sometimes taking years between albums. However, this can be attributed to Lucinda's fabled obsession with perfection and attention to detail.

Born in Louisiana, Williams was raised listening to blues and country artists such as Hank Williams. Moving around the country, she shared her time between Austin, Houston, New York, and Los Angeles. Her first album,  Ramblin' on My Mind, also referred to as Ramblin' , was released in 1979 and featured classic country and blues standards. Her follow up, 1980's Happy Woman Blues featured all original compositions and showcased her talents as a singer and songwriter but was generally overlooked by fans and critics.

Lucinda wouldn't release her next official follow up until 1988. The eponymous album featured the song "Passsionate Kisses." The song would be recorded by Mary Chapin Carter and would give Lucinda her first grammy. However, Lucinda Williams' greatest success would come with the release of 1998's Car Wheels on a Gravel Road. After years of working on the album obsessively and a few legal woes, the album was bought and released by Mercury. The album went on to become gold and would win Lucinda the best folk album that year. Lucinda has released a couple of albums in the last decade including 2001's Essence and this year's Blessed.

Tonite's show at the Bijou will hopefully showcase Lucinda's amazing talents in a very intimate venue. Tickets are $39.50 plus fees and showtime is at 8:00p. Read more for what to expect...
